What is a BeBot?

BeBot is a beach-cleaning robot–the first of its kind–that's both environmentally friendly and quiet!

A Technical Innovation For
Ocean Conservation

Clean Shores' first project is raising funding for a BeBot—a remote-controlled, solar- and battery-powered robot—to help with beach cleanups in Gloucester, Massachusetts. This machine, created by The Searial Cleaners, sifts through sand up to 3-4 inches (7.6-10 centimeters) deep picking up debris as small as .4 inches (1 centimeter). BeBot’s performance has been recognized by the scientific community and its unique design exerts exceptionally low pressure on the ground. This means BeBot safeguards plant and animal life—as well as the sand—during its cleaning process, all while operating without contributing to erosion.

BeBot is remotely operated on-site by a person and it announces its presence to ensure safe operation. Designed with environmental sensitivity in mind, it protects plant and animal life while preserving the sand. Fully electric and emission-free, it generates no harmful gases or greenhouse emissions and operates quietly, minimizing disruption to wildlife.

Safety Features

bird in trash water
litter collected

BeBot sifts through sand to collect litter that can hurt beachgoers and get into the ocean to harm marine life. It even picks up small debris hidden under the sand that is often missed by manual beach cleanups. BeBot also clears seaweed, levels beach surfaces, and navigates steep terrain with ease.

What can a Bebot collect?

Marine pollution is a growing global crisis, harming marine ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. The Ocean Conservancy’s 2024 Annual Report highlights cigarette butts as the most common litter. Plastic pollution degrades into microplastics, which infiltrate food chains when ingested by fish and other animals ending up on people’s tables. These tiny fragments, often buried in sand by natural forces and human activity, pose lasting threats to both marine and human life in multiple ways.

What Can Bebot Collect?

Marine pollution is a growing global crisis, harming marine ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Plastic pollution degrades into microplastics, which infiltrate food chains when ingested by fish that end up on people’s dinner tables. These tiny fragments, often buried in sand by natural forces and human activity, pose lasting threats to both marine and human life in multiple ways. BeBot efficiently removes litter of different shapes and sizes like bottle caps, bottles, cigarette butts, food wrappers, and microplastic debris.

BeBot Revolutionizing Beach Cleanups Across the U.S.

Bebot beach-cleaning robot, is transforming shoreline conservation with its eco-friendly technology. Already impactful in the U.S., a Bebot removed more than 25,000 pieces of trash in Lake Tahoe in 2024 alone, and BeBot is also being used for beach cleanups in Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, and Michigan. Our project aims to bring a Bebot to Massachusetts, promoting cleaner beaches and healthier oceans. Ultimately, we would like to have 2-3 BeBots to clean the entire New England coastline (plus New York and New Jersey).

BeBot Beats Manual Cleanups

In 2022, a cleanup test was conducted at Lake Tahoe between a manual cleanup and a BeBot. First, volunteers did a manual cleanup on a section of the beach—collecting 30 pieces of trash. Afterward, a BeBot was deployed to clean the same area, sifting through the top layers of sand. It recovered 300 additional pieces of micro-trash—ten times more than what was collected by hand.
