However, this experience can take a turn for the worse when beachgoers are greeted by littered shorelines and visible ocean pollution. Beach litter has been a persistent issue for decades, contributing to both marine pollution and long-term environmental damage. Today, however, advancements in sustainable technology are creating new hope for stronger marine conservation and more effective, eco-friendly beach cleanup efforts.

New Technology Spotlight: BeBot

One of the most promising tools in sustainable beach cleanup is BeBot, a beach-cleaning robot. This remote-controlled, fully electric machine is designed to efficiently remove waste from sandy shorelines without harming the environment.


BeBot can:

  • Clean up to 3,200 square meters per hour

  • Sift through sand up to 3-4 inches deep picking up debris as small as .4 inches

  • Remove microplastics and hard-to-detect waste

  • Operate with zero emissions

What is Really on Our Beaches

Among the most common pieces of waste found on our beaches are:

  • Plastic bottle caps and bottles, 

  • Food wrappers

  • Cigarette butts

  • Microplastics 


Plastic pollution degrades into microplastics, small plastic pieces less than five millimeters long, which can be too small for manual beach-cleaning to detect. These microplastics enter marine ecosystems, where they are consumed by fish and other wildlife. Over time, this contributes significantly to ocean pollution and threatens human health through the seafood supply chain.


Additionally, sharp debris poses physical dangers to beachgoers, particularly children. Without intervention, much of this waste is swept into the ocean, worsening marine pollution and undermining global marine conservation efforts.


Sustainable cleaning technology improves detection and removal, preventing waste from re-entering the water and reducing long-term ecological harm.


Where is Bebot Today?

Beaches such as the ones around Lake Michigan and Lake Tahoe have already begun implementing these Bebots. Since 2017, the Belle Island Conservancy removed upwards of 40,000 pounds of littered plastic pollution from Belle Isle and its waterways. Some of the pieces of waste collected were then recycled into a public display showing the large amount of waste. 


The Lake Michigan and Lake Tahoe programs have even incorporated Bebots as part of beach events raising awareness for clean beaches and ocean protection.
